In a significant move to deepen academic and innovation partnerships between India and Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya visited the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where discussions were held to establish a Sri Lanka Academic and Research Hub on campus.
During her visit, Dr Amarasuriya interacted with Prof. Arvind Nema, Deputy Director (Operations), Prof. Anil Verma, Dean of International Programmes, faculty members, international students, and startup founders.
The conversations focused on building a robust framework for joint research projects, student and faculty exchanges, and cooperation in emerging technology domains such as AI, sustainability, and healthcare innovation.
The Sri Lankan Prime Minister also toured IIT Delhi’s Research and Innovation Park, where she explored ongoing collaborations and cutting-edge facilities that bridge academia and industry.
Two IIT Delhi-incubated startups, CYRAN AI and Cluix, demonstrated their innovations: an AI-powered STEM learning kit and a portable water-quality analyser capable of rapid, on-site testing.
Highlighting IIT Delhi’s global footprint, Prof. Verma proposed setting up a Sri Lanka Academic and Research Hub, envisioned as a joint platform connecting higher education institutions across both countries.
The hub would focus on research exchange, innovation-driven skill development, and collaborative problem-solving in areas critical to South Asia’s sustainable growth.
The institute also reaffirmed its commitment to welcoming more Sri Lankan students to its postgraduate and doctoral programmes.
Officials noted that targeted scholarships funded by the Sri Lankan government could encourage wider participation in advanced studies at IIT Delhi and its international campus in Abu Dhabi.
The proposed initiative, if approved, could mark a new chapter in Indo–Sri Lankan educational diplomacy—anchored in innovation, research excellence, and shared regional progress.
